A man said to have four children with his own daughter has been arrested amid claims he carried out sexual and physical assaults on members of his family.
The 50-year-old Frenchman was taken into custody in the town of Dunkirk, close to the border with Belgium, police have reported.
Although incest is not a crime in France, sexual relations between family members are not allowed without consent.
The man, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is said to have ‘attacked’ his 30-year-old daughter on a number of occasions.
The charges he is facing are sexual and physical assault, rather than anything to do with his relationship with his daughter.
Many people in the Dunkirk area were said to know about the couple, but it only became a criminal matter when one of their children, a two-year-old disabled girl, died.
Police then discovered that the man had allegedly been assaulting all of the younger members of his family.
A bill was introduced in France last year to bring the country in line with countries including the UK, were incest is outlawed. The Paris parliament rejected it, however.
Members of the same family can indulge in sexual relations, as long as both parties agree, and are over 15, the age of consent in France.
A Calais police spokesman confirmed that the man was "in custody, and being questioned".
