The family of man missing at sea for 66 days has hailed his rescue a “miracle” after he was found 200 miles off the North Carolina coast.
Louis Jordan, 37, was flown by helicopter to a hospital in Norfolk, Virginia, after he was dramatically spotted by sailors aboard a container ship.
The US Coast Guard in Portsmouth, Virgina, said they were notified about 1.30pm by the crew of the German-flagged Houston Express, that they had seen a man on a yacht off the coast of Cape Hatteras and had taken him aboard.
After dispatching a Jayhawk helicopter from North Carolina’s Air Station Elizabeth City, Jordan was medevaced to the Sentara Norfolk General Hospital where he was able to walk in for treatment.
He was examined for injuries to his shoulder and checked for other medical problems.
A source close to his family said they had never given up hope he would be found alive.
“It is a miracle,” they said.
“Everyone is so delighted.
“They cannot believe how Louis managed to survive such an ordeal at sea for so long.”
His yacht, a 35-foot Alberg called Angel, was spotted bobbing in Atlantic Ocean.
His family had reported him missing on January 29.
Jordan was last seen at a marina in Conway, South Carolina, six days earlier.
Coast Guard Lieutenant Krystyn Pecora confirmed Jordan had been rescued adding: “His family are driving up to Norfolk and are excited to see him again.”
Pecora said the details over how he came to be missing were still under investigation.
“There is no reason to question what happened and we'll get more information when they can speak to him,” she added.
