Kylie Jenner has been forced to respond to critics who accused her of 'blacking up' for a new photoshoot, which caused a Twitter storm.
The youngest member of the Kardashian klan posted a snap of herself, taken by Marcelo Cantu, on Saturday evening, writing 'I wish I looked like this all time.". It quickly amassed more 600,000 likes and was followed up by a second picture from make-up artist Joyce Bonelli.
The bronzed picture, depicting Kylie, 17, with a bronzed face, blue eyes and shimmering skin, rapidly divided attention - with fans claiming the reality star was guilty of 'cultural appropriation' by 'blacking up' for the photoshoot.
One Twitter user fumed: "How is Kylie Jenner dumb enough to do blackface, post it on IG, with the caption "what i wish i looked like all the time" I need sit down."
Another wrote: "Girl, you are not black. This makes me so angry.
Appropriating another's culture is not some beauty trend. It's a culture not a costume. This makes me so angry, why is it that ethnic features are only deemed beautiful on non-ethnic bodies?"
One fan simply wrote: 'Kylie Jenner wants to be black so bad."
By Sunday it appeared Kylie had removed the picture and she took to Twitter to address her critics.
"So just got the time to head on social media lol. The photographer used a black light & neon lights for those photos. Yes, In another world I wish I could have pink hair & blue eyes & covered in sparkles."
Her supporters took to Twitter in droves to defend the star. "Kylie Jenner wanna be Gold Dust soooo bad.. okay, I'm done. Leave that damn girl alone. She's channeling alien, not Black."
Another wrote: "Kylie look like an alien in those pics and y'all are calling it blackface. Smh y'all just want s**t to be mad about."
