Jose Espinoza said he deliberately covered his face with black paint "in an effort to camouflage himself".
He had evaded cops at his home in Madera, California, but when they later spotted the 23-year-old they were not fooled by the poor disguise and arrested him on stolen property and car theft charges.
The spray paint bottle Espinoza allegedly used was taken as evidence.
