After month's spent gathering intelligence, authorities said they were led to Gomez, who was captured without a shot being fired, by following one of his messengers.

They lay in wait, then sprung the trap when he stepped outside his house.

When he was captured he was wearing a hat and scarf to conceal his identity.

Several weapons, including a grenade launcher were also capture, as were eight of his associates and his brother.

On Twitter, President Enrique Pena Nieto declared the arrest had strengthened the rule of law.

He said: "With this arrest, the rule of law is strengthened in the country and [we] continue moving toward Mexico in Peace."

Refering to his past career, he also went by the name of "La Tuta" and "El Profe".

While many of his peers in the drug world were killed or captured, he continued to remain at large.
