An 'evil' nanny allegedly abandoned twin babies in a freezing room without food or water while she embarked on a three-day booze bender.
Evgenya Galkina, 55, had agreed to look after her sister-in-law's one year-old twins whilst she was away working.
However, witnesses later raised the alarm after claiming they had seen her staggering around her village clutching a bottle of vodka.
The twins were discovered inside a freezing cold house, lying on the floor, exhausted and suffering from malnourishment.
Both are currently in an intensive care unit in a Russian hospital, but they are expected to make a full recovery.
Galkina had been paid 5,000 rubles (£50) to look after the tots whilst their mum, 34 year-old widow Inna Burdyy, was away working for a week.
However, police in Russia's Ramensky District say she told officers when she was arrested that she had 'lost interest' as she 'hadn't been paid enough.'
Horrified mum Inna said: "When I got a call from the police I was devastated.
"I earn very little and since the death of my husband I have had to go wherever I can to find work.
"I thought my sister-in-law would help, but she is an evil, evil person."
Lumberjack Elisha Vassiliev, 36, said: "I was coming back from the forest when I saw her clutching a bottle of vodka and swaying in the street.
"I knew Inna had agreed to go away for work and that her sister-in-law was supposed to be looking after the babies.
"I asked her how the twins were doing but she was so drunk she couldn’t answer so I decided to go and check."
A police spokesman said: "The babies were in very bad condition and were taken to hospital where they are now in intensive care but their lives are not in danger.
"When we arrested the woman she said she knew she would be judged for her actions but that she didn’t care.
"She admitted she had lost interest because the babies’ mother had not paid her enough."
Galkina is now facing a charge of endangering life and neglect which has a maximum sentence of five years in jail.
