These are shocking images
of dogs being rounded up in bags and cages by snatching gangs triggering a wave
of vigilante attacks across Vietnam.
At least 20 dognappers
are believed to have been murdered in the last three years as outraged pet
owners and neighbours take matters into their own hands.
A growing market for crooks who steal dogs to sell them on or
hold their owners to ransom has seen a spate of cruel thefts by criminals gangs.
An economic boom in
the country has seen pets change hands for significant amounts of money with
many dogs stolen from poorer homes to be sold to middle-class animal lovers.
It is believed that
dog thieves can earn up to £60 a night stealing pets.
In many cases pets are also being stolen for expensive dog meat.
But the trend has seen
around 25 recorded revenge attacks in the last three years - resulting in the
deaths of at least 20 people.
NBC reports how the
tiny village of Nhi Trung - which has seen more than 200 dogs disappear in the
last year - recently saw two dognappers beaten to death in a ditch after being
ambushed by fed-up locals.
Villager Nguyen Van
Thiet, 72, told the network: "We love our dogs.
"Who's the first
to welcome you home each day?
"It's not your
kids.
"It's certainly
not your wife.
"It's your dog."
