America’s Brand New Fighter Jet Estimated At $67bn
Powering through a cloud of smoke, this fighter aircraft shows why it’s one of the world’s most advanced fighter jets.
The U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor took to the sky over the Tyndall Air Force Base near Panama City, Florida.
The stealth fighter, developed by Lockheed Martin, is one of the newest additions to the US armoury.
But while it wowed the crowds by breaking the sound barrier, it also very nearly broke the bank. The price tag for the fleet of jets is estimated at $67bn (£45bn) after spiralling costs and technical difficulties.
America’s new prized fighter became fully operational in 2007 and has flown over Alaska, Malaysia, Japan, South Korea and the Middle East.
But it only saw its first combat last year when it joined the US-led action against Isisin Syria – and its most recent mission was to entertain the crowds back home in Florida.
The Tyndall base is home to the Gulf Coast Salute Air Show which organises spectacular displays of military jets to build relationships with the base and community.
The show, which is also used to boost military recruitment in the US, also featured parachute displays, vintage aircraft and wingwalkers.
